The advances made in medicine and health care have been nothing short of revolutionary in recent years. New ways of treating diseases and cures for some of the most deadly have made the field a truly modern and progressive one. Yet beyond these great advances, there has also been the rise of the parallel field known as alternative medicine. It represents non-conventional or non-traditional means of improving health. Probably among the foremost forms of this type of medicine is aromatherapy, where essential oils are mostly used for the health benefits it provides.

To have a better understanding of aromatherapy, Len Price and Shirley Price presents the book, Aromatherapy for Health Professionals. Well Done Reference
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Well-done reference guide with good cross-referenceing of indications, oils, contraindications, etc. There are a few oils missing from the detailed reference area, but overall this is my favorite book on the subject – and worth the cost. Nice clinical study citations, too.

As a Health Education Specialist it is my job to work with clients in finding ways to improve their health. It is also my job to provide the most acurate health information. I make a point to check and double check any informational source that I might use as reference in considering possible avenues.

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in making such decisions pertaining to aromatherapy. It is full of actual case studies, physicians reference notes, reasonable scientific methodology, and sound references. This is one of the only books that I know of that successfully convinced me of the possible use of aromatherapy with more traditional allopathic methods.

If you should choose to pursue aromatherapy as a means to improving your ailments, I do stress that you address your concerns and your plans with your physician to ensure not only the best possible outcome but, your safety as well.

    Very useful

I found “Aromatherapy for Health Professionals” tremendously interesting. It offered information on practical application with a focus on healing while explaining the science (what we know of it, anyway) behind why essential oils work the way they do.

It was basically a medical textbook and often used medical terms. Most of the terms were defined in the glossary in the back, but their meaning was usually obvious from or defined in the text, so you don’t have to have medical training to understand this book.

The book included information on tests and case studies in which essential oils were used to treat medical conditions (both for physical healing and to calm or lift the mood). I also gained an understanding of why the cautions given in other aromatheraphy books where given so I now feel confident that I can use essential oils effectively and safely. The charts on lethal doses (for ingested and topical) for a number of common essential oils were also tremendously reassuring.

Most of the book (Sections 1 and 2) was for a general audience and wasn’t specific to the UK. Section 3 was more about using essential oils for specific problems (in the critical care unit or a nursing home, etc.) in the UK medical setting, but there was still a lot that was applicable to anyone using essential oils. Section 4 was short, but got very specific about practicing aromatheraphy in a medical setting in the UK and then worldwide.

The Appendix contained useful charts and lists showing which essential oils are effective in treating which problems. It also listed safety information, like which essential oils can be toxic in high dosages or have potentially unwanted side-effects, like irritating the skin. Finally, it listed about one hundred essential oils, their chemical content, what actions they cause and what they are good at treating, and safety information specific to that oil as well as observations about its use taken from case studies, etc.

If you’re really into using essential oils and enjoy making up your own blends, especially for health problems, I’d highly recommend this book as a wonderful resource.

    What I was looking for….
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had read several books on essential oils and aromatherapy. Some were filled with anti-Western medicine rhetoric, others were focused on cosmetics, while others contained good anecdotes with recipes interspersed. I use these, but was looking for something else, which I couldn’t really articulate.

I haven’t finished reading this, but it is exactly what I was looking for. It combines practical application with reasonable science while focusing on healing.

The book is written in the context of the UK medical system, which doesn’t match the US system very well, but it isn’t hard to generalize the concepts to a different venue.

In the back are several appendices listing the recommendations and summarizing the findings.

Definitely worth the time and money.

Although I haven’t finished this book, what I have read so far is easy to understand and thorough. I purchased it in order to study for standardized exams after completing my certification as an Aromatherapist, and the book is not only detailed and informative, but interesting and engaging to read.

This is a very welll written book but I feel it is not for someone who has just started exploring aromatheray. The summaries are very helpful. This is not a book you could read in one day for sure. It is full of interesting facts but at times one wants to just get into the healing sections quicker. I would suggeast this book to others but they would do better to get intro books on aromatheray if they are new to the field.
