When you look at the society today, we see an infiltration of teens not just making bad decisions but doing nothing to remedy them. There is an abundance of drug and alcohol use that oftentimes leads to crimes which in turn means more are dropping out of school. These things are undeniably counterproductive to the “normal” teenage years. Is something rotten in the land of the teenagers? Not as unusual as we may like to think since teenagers have always had difficulty managing stress and anxiety.

The difference from now to the past is that in the past, teens coping with stress used to do productive activities to solve this. In managing stress and anxiety, teenagers used to take to sports or other activities that allowed them an outlet to deal with that stress. Nowadays, teenagers are eating poor diets, spending most of their time in front of the TV or video games. Something needs to be done to prevent a complete disintegration of their teenage years.

Coping with Stress: Teenagers Need Support

Teenagers are in schools that are failing to stimulate them and on the home front, most parents are rarely home since they’re out working in order to support the families. What you’re left with are teens coping with stress miserably because they do not have enough supervision and worse, misguided outlets for their stress – drugs and alcohol.

Teens coping with stress must have a sound support system. They need someone to be there for them especially they feel overwhelmed by the immensity of this stage of their life. When there is no support system in place, managing stress and anxiety can be difficult and only drown the teenagers in more problems.

Just imagine for one second when you were a teenager. You felt as though your problems were yours only. Most teens coping with stress go through the same things that we all went through when we too were teens. Find time to talk to your teenager and let them know you went through what they are going through. Tell them your own teenage worries. By doing this, we are relating to issues of these teens and in a way, we can help them overcome their problems and help them to effectively manage their stress.

Having a role model, even as ordinary as you, will help them realize that despite what they are going through, they’ll be able to handle stress much better and they’ll be able to learn and take pleasure from their teenage years because it only comes along once.
